LGC Volunteer Civic Projects

Garden Therapy – Garden Therapy is a community project at the Livonia American House on Farmington Rd, south of Plymouth Rd. LGC members volunteer monthly, September through May, to assist participating residents in making a small, personal flower arrangement or craft using fresh and/or dried  plant material. Personal interactions and handling of colorful flowers bring joy to the residents.

Historic Garden – Since 1989, LGC has maintained a mixed species garden at Livonia’s historic village, Greenmead. Maintenance begins in the spring with a group cleanup, followed by the planting of annuals and new perennials. Throughout the summer, garden club members water and weed the garden. A second group cleanup takes place in the fall. The gardens at Greenmead are open to the public at no charge.

Plant Sharing – Our annual Plant Sharing event is held at Greenmead on the third Saturday of May from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. LGC members and gardeners in the community are invited to divide, pot up, and label their plants, common or botanical name (if you know it), as well as “Sun” or “Shade.” Houseplants are also welcome. This is a “Rain or Shine” event, so come prepared but hope for fair weather. You do not need to bring a plant to take home a plant. We also welcome garden materials like pots, bricks, etc.

Angela Hospice – On the second Saturday of December from 10:00 a.m. to noon, LGC members meet at Angela Hospice, 14100 Newburgh Rd., Livonia. Our members teach teenage volunteers, grades 7 through 12, from area schools and community organizations how to create fresh-greens arrangements. Approximately 75 arrangements are made and then distributed by Angela Hospice adult volunteers to the homes of hospice patients and their families to brighten their holiday season.

Flower Show – A Small Standard Flower show will be staged in the atrium of the Livonia Civic Library. Designs using plant material will be artfully staged and Horticulture specimens from our July gardens will be on display. The date for the show is still to be determined.

Community Flowers – LGC members recycle donated flowers and vases into new arrangements which are then delivered to Livonia’s public or community spaces. Look for our flowers in libraries, nursing homes, civic buildings, and other locations. We want to share the beauty and joy of fresh flowers with all our neighbors and friends.

Garden Recognition – This project is designed to recognize the landscape beautification efforts of home and business owners in our community. Our goal is to recognize those who provide beauty in a simple pot of flowers as well as those who have more extensive landscaping. Throughout the summer volunteers identify deserving spaces. A Certificate of Recognition from the LGC is delivered or mailed to each selected location.

Blue Star Memorial Marker – Located on the south side of Five Mile, just east of Farmington Road, this tribute to our veterans is decorated with wreaths throughout the year using fresh, dried, or treated dried plant material and ribbons or other accessories.

Children’s HospitalMembers provide ornaments and ribbons and design and decorate artificial Christmas trees to be donated to the hospital’s fundraiser.
